Armthorpe Elmfield Band's 60th Anniversary Concert

Marking a Milestone

Armthorpe Elmfield Band is a brass band from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, started back in 1964 by Haydn Griffiths MBE. I've been playing with the band for over ten years now, and for our 60th anniversary concert, I wanted to use my web and digital design skills to give something back. I designed a set of posters, tickets, and programs to help make the celebration feel that bit more special.

Mood Board

Before diving into the designs, I put together a mood board to capture the overall look and feel I wanted for the 60th anniversary materials. I focused on key ideas like community, heritage, and celebration to reflect the band's long history and the significance of the occasion.

The band's colours are navy, burgundy, and gold. Their logo is a gold emblem, as is the logo of the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers, who joined us for the concert. I knew it was important to incorporate both navy and gold throughout the designs to keep everything feeling connected and true to the band's identity.

Tickets

I designed these tickets to match the overall look of the 60th anniversary materials, keeping the band's colours and style consistent. I wanted them to feel special and memorable — something people might want to keep as a reminder of such an important concert.

It was also important to make sure all the key event details, like the start time and venue, were clearly included, so attendees had everything they needed right at hand.

Programs

The programs needed to be well-presented and give audience members information about both Armthorpe Elmfield Band and the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers. It was important to capture all the details accurately and organise everything clearly, so the audience could easily follow along and learn more about the groups performing.

The program also included a list of the music being performed on the night, helping the audience keep track of where we were in the concert and what was coming up next.

Programs were sold on the night for £3 and made a lovely keepsake for those who wanted to remember the occasion.

Posters

The posters were key in spreading awareness about the 60th anniversary concert. I designed them to be bold and eye-catching, making sure the important information, including how to buy tickets, was clear and easy to read.

Posters were displayed around local venues, community spaces, and shared online. Thanks to all the promotion, the event was a sell-out, with over 200 people attending on the night.

Reflection

Designing the materials for the 60th anniversary concert was such a rewarding experience. One of the biggest things I had to think about was making sure everything felt special and celebratory, but still friendly and true to the band's personality. It was also a bit of a challenge fitting all the important details into smaller formats like the tickets and programs without it feeling cramped, but I’m really happy with how everything turned out.

It was great to see the posters up around the community and to hear positive feedback from people on the night, a lot of audience members said how nice everything looked, which meant a lot. Knowing that the designs helped make the event feel even more special (and that the concert ended up being a sell-out!) made it a really proud moment for me.
